Our Savior's Lutheran Church to Host Tim Tebow Foundation's "Night to Shine" Prom on Feb. 7
Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020 -- Our Savior’s Lutheran Church (63 Mountain View Ave, Albany, N.Y. 12205) will serve as one of 720 churches around the world to host Night to Shine 2020, an unforgettable prom night experience for people with special needs ages 14 and older, on Friday, February 7, from 6-9 p.m.
Sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, the event, which is now in its sixth year, takes place in all 50 states and 24 countries and is supported by 200,000 volunteers who come together to celebrate 100,000 honored guests.
“Everyone deserves their moment, their `night to shine,’” said Event Organizer Tom Roemke. “We are thrilled to be a part of this movement that is uniting churches of different denominations all over the world with the common goal of celebrating people with special needs.”
Night to Shine guests enter the complimentary event on a red carpet with a warm welcome from a friendly crowd and paparazzi. Once inside, guests receive the royal treatment, including hair and makeup stations, shoe shining areas, limousine rides, corsages and boutonnieres, a catered dinner, karaoke, prom favors for each honored guest, a respite room for parents and caretakers, and, of course, a dance floor… all leading up to the moment when each guest is crowned king or queen of the prom.
“Night to Shine is my favorite night of the year,” said Tim Tebow, whose foundation has committed more than $3.5 million in financial support to enable hundreds of sites to host this one-of-a-kind event. “It’s also a favorite night for thousands of kings and queens all over the world who we crown at the end of this prom. Every town, village, state, and country should host a Night to Shine for their special needs community. It’s a time in which people can work together and be a part of something significant and life-changing.”
Dozens of volunteers — ranging from greeters and medical personnel to karaoke and set up/tear down crews — help to make every guest feel special. Our Savior’s Lutheran Church is currently seeking additional Buddy Escorts, whose job is to escort guests and give them an unforgettable experience.
“We need mature (must be at least 16 ), patient, loving people to serve as escorts,” said Roemke, noting that it’s one of the prom’s most important jobs. “As an escort, you are responsible for taking a guest on your arm as you show them around prom. You'll escort them to get dinner, karaoke, get their hair done, play games, and of course, dance!”
