City of Troy, N.Y. Invites Cities/Towns of Troy Across USA to Take Part in Virtual Edition of 2020 Troy Turkey Trot
Monday, Nov. 16, 2020 -- There may be considerably more people who register Troy as their hometown taking part in the virtual 73rd edition of the Troy Turkey Trot set for Nov. 26-28.
Organizers of the Trot — one of the nation’s oldest and largest Turkey Trots — today announced they have sent an invitation from Mayor Patrick Madden to the mayors of nine U.S. Troy cities (Alabama, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas) extending a personal invitation to them and members of their communities to participate in Troy, N.Y.’s signature Thanksgiving Day event. Leaders of five towns of Troy located in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont and Wisconsin were also sent an invitation.
“One of the toughest things about the COVID-19 pandemic is the manner in which it has separated friends and families,” said Troy Mayor Patrick Madden. “The goal of this outreach initiative is to bring people together over the Thanksgiving holiday. With our event going virtual in 2020, we felt there was no better opportunity to connect with other Troy communities than to invite them to join our virtual event, which celebrates family, fun and fitness.
“Earlier this year, Troy, N.Y. forged a connection with Troy, Kan. after we sent a thank you package to a Kansas farmer who generously donated an N95 mask to Gov. Andrew Cuomo during the height of the coronavirus pandemic in New York,” continued Madden. “We’re hoping to continue that connection with Troy, Kan., as well as other cities and towns that share our name.”
This year’s virtual event will feature a running window from Thursday, Nov. 26 (Thanksgiving Day) with the start at 10 a.m. EST through Saturday, Nov. 28 at 11 p.m. Unofficial results will be released Sunday, Nov. 29 on TroyTurkeyTrot.com. Trotters will use a state-of-the-art Troy Turkey Trot app that allows them to race with others, real time, regardless of their location. The app uses their phone’s GPS to track their race progress, and receive real-time data, regardless of their location. Watch the app video.
Trotters in the event’s 5K and 10K will receive a premium long-sleeve tech shirt, while participants in the Turkey Walk Mile and Grade School Mile will receive a Troy Turkey Trot face mask. Swag upgrades can be made during registration at TroyTurkeyTrot.com.
Participants are invited to take part in the event’s virtual costume contest which features two categories: Best Thanksgiving Day and Most Unique costume. Participants can enter the contest, which runs through Saturday, Nov. 28 at 11 p.m.,
All entrants are also invited to help feed hungry families and provide warm shelter to homeless men, women and children by making a donation during online registration to the Trot’s two charities, the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York and Joseph’s House & Shelter.
Event organizers will hold a 45-minute Facebook Live broadcast Thanksgiving morning. The broadcast, which will be simulcast on both the Troy Turkey Trot’s and City of Troy’s Facebook pages, will feature live reports from the virtual leaderboard and interviews with Mayor Madden, the event’s charities and longtime participants.
The Troy Turkey Trot is presented by Pioneer Bank. Other event sponsors include Wm. J. Fagan & Sons, Capital Region Honda Dealers, Lamar, Choice Physical Therapy, and Brown’s Brewing Company.
