The Girl Scout Troops are working to achieve their 3 Cheers for Animals Journey Badge, which focuses on learning about animals, how to care for them and animals’ impact on our communities. The Girl Scouts invited residents to join them in discovering the differences between therapy and service dogs. Georgia, a therapy dog from Ichabod Crane’s primary school and Honey, who works in the elementary/middle school through the Social Service Dog Program, were present for the informative evening. After the presentation, the young visitors read a book to the residents and completed a “get to know you” questionnaire. As part of their badge coursework, the Girl Scouts have toured and collected food for a local Humane Society and met with a sheriff and his K-9 partner and learned how they partner to keep our communities safe.

Residents of The Summit at Saratoga’s Social Knitting and Crocheting Club donated 70 scarves and an array of non-perishable items to Code Blue Saratoga Friday, Jan. 26. The scarves, which were knitted and made from fleece material, were part of the nationwide “Share a Scarf” drive in which volunteers make scarves for the homeless and leave them tied to trees in parks or urban areas for people who need them. Code Blue Saratoga, which is located at the Soul Saving Station (62 Henry Street), provides temporary unrestricted shelter to individuals ages 19-72 who are homeless during periods of hazardous winter weather, including sleeping accommodations, meals, and essential supplies. It has sheltered 91 individuals this winter. “We are really grateful for these donations, as they help to keep our budget under control,” said Cheryl Ann Murphy-Parant, director, Code Blue Saratoga. “Anything that we can receive in kind prevents us from having to go out and shop for these items.” For those interested in making a donation, Code Blue Saratoga is seeking coffee, drink mix, paper plates, paper towels, toilet paper and plastic silverware, as well as volunteers. ALTAMONT, N.Y. (Nov. 20, 2017) — For the second year running, representatives from The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Guilderland partnered with the Guilderland Food Pantry to make Thanksgiving a little brighter for Guilderland residents in need. Twenty-five turkeys and two roasting chickens were provided by the nursing facility and then delivered the local families along with staples such as canned corn, beans, yams, fresh fruit, stuffing, butter, rolls, Jell-O and milk. “Holiday times are tough for many families in this community,” said The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Guilderland Assistant Administrator Josh Held, noting that in Altamont, one in four school children qualify for a free lunch, which is a key indicator of poverty. “We are trying to assist them as best we can.” For more information or to make a donation, call the Guilderland Food Pantry at 518-930-1001, or visit GuilderlandFoodPantry.com.
